Santa's Landing Pad: A Roofing Blog

Why do you need a strong roof on your home? To support Santa's sleigh, of course! In a more realistic sense, however, a strong roof is important for your home's protection. It keeps the wind and rain outside, and it also insulates your home against the chill of winter and the heat of summer. Most people think of roofs as being made from shingles, but roofers can make a strong roof from slate, tile, metal, or an array of other materials, too. We hope that as you read this roofing blog, you gain a lot of knowledge about the profession and about roofs in general.

3 Ways To Maintain Your Gutters

Rain gutters are a necessary part of your house. They collect all the water that falls on your roof and then funnel it away from your roof and down to the ground. You need to ensure that the gutters are in good shape because they are such an essential part of your house. What are some things that you can do to maintain your gutters?

Visual Inspection

One of the things you can do is to visually inspect your gutters and downspouts regularly. All you have to do is to walk around your house, looking at your gutters. You are looking for missing hangers, corrosion, flaking paint, and holes. If you do this regularly, you are less likely to have your gutters failing without warning. As soon as you notice a problem, you will be able to call a gutter contractor to repair or replace your gutters.

Cleaning

Part of maintaining your gutters includes cleaning them out. You should clean them out at least once a year, either in the fall or the spring. The way to clean your gutters is to climb up on a ladder and scoop the gunk out of your gutters. You can scoop it out and drop it on the ground, or take a bucket up the ladder with you and put the gunk in the bucket. Make sure you wear a sturdy pair of work gloves while doing it because you don't want to get hurt by anything in the gunk. Make sure to check around the downspouts to make sure that there isn't anything that might cause a clog.

Gutter Guards

You can also install gutter guards. These guards go on top of your gutters. They have small holes so that the debris on your roof doesn't end up in your gutters, but the water that falls goes into the gutters. Doing that will make sure that your gutters don't get gunked up. Some small things may still make it through the guards, but a few small things will be different from many leaves and twigs.

Making sure your gutters are well maintained is important to your house. Carrying all that water away from your home protects your house and your foundation. If you are worried about your gutters, call a rain gutter contractor to come to check them out for you. They can tell you if you need to replace them or not.
